The Bigger Picture: Visual Archives and the Smithsonian

Effie Kapsalis

Effie Kapsalis

What do you do?

I am in the Smithsonian Archives web division and help to get the Archives’ resources, stories, and collections online.

Favorite spot in DC to recommend to visitors

I always recommend the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial at night. Also, if you happen to be in town during the cherry blossoms, the National Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism During World War II is outstanding.

Collection Favorite

My favorite collection right now is the Science Service Collection for two reasons; first, it’s really interesting to look at what science stories made the news in the first half of the 1900s, and second, there are a number of inspiring women who were early pioneers in science whom I knew nothing about.
