Anthropology Exhibit at the International Exhibition, Philadelphia, 1876

 

The Smithsonian Institution combined with the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs to create the Anthropology Exhibit at the International Exhibition held in Philadelphia in 1876. Original in black and white. SIA, RU 95 (Photograph Collection, 1850s-    ), box 61, folder 5.

 

 

 

Children’s Room, Smithsonian Institution Building, 1901

 

The  Children’s Room opened in the Smithsonian Institution Building in 1901, with Secretary Samuel P. Langley as curator.   Langley wrote that the objects selected were designed to be of interest to children rather than for practical instruction (Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution, 1901, page 34). Exhibits, The Pan-American Exposition, Buffalo, 1901

 

The Pan-American Exposition was held in Buffalo, New York, in 1901.  The Smithsonian Institution displayed its own collections at the Exposition.  In addition, Smithsonian staff led a collecting expedition to the Philippine Islands for objects to be displayed for the Government Board Outlying Possession exhibit. Original in black and white. SIA, RU 95, box 62A, folder 10. 

Parchment, circa late 16th Century

 

Image was taken from a photograph of a collection item, number 084482.000, National Museum of the American Indian.  Original is a parchment containing a Nahuatl painted tribute record, Tepexi, Puebla, Mexico, possibly late sixteenth century. Parchment was bound in a manuscript, “Ano de 1750.  Testimonio dela informacionla-da por Don Joachin de San Fransisco Moctesuma Casique e Governador, quessue de el Pueblo de Tempexi...”  The manuscript was a  legal copy made from an original dated 1584. Original in color.

Exhibition Hall, National Collection of Fine Arts, 1926

 

SIA, RU 311 (Office of the Director, National Collection of Fine Arts, 1892-1960), box 33, folder 3.  The exhibition of modern Italian art was held from March 25th to April 24th, 1926.  The exhibition, containing over 100 paintings, more than 30 sculptures, with graphic and decorative art work, was held under the auspices of the Italy American Society through the patronage of the King of Italy. Original in black and white.

 

East Africa 1926: Loading of Crates Containing Animals Being Shipped to the National Zoological Park

 

SIA, RU 7293 (William M. Mann and Lucile Quarry Mann Papers, circa 1885-1981), box 20, photographic album, Smithsonian-Chrysler Expedition to East Africa, 1926. One year after becoming superintendent (later director) of the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park, Mann enlisted the support of Walter P. Chrysler and led a collecting expedition to Africa. Original in black and white.
