HISTORICAL NOTE

The Smithsonian Office of Educational Research (SOER) was established on October 1, 1983, to investigate and improve learning as it occurs outside the formal educational system. SOER reported to the Assistant Secretary for Science. John H. Falk, previously on the staff of the Chesapeake Bay Center for Environmental Studies (CBCES), was appointed Director. SOER was abolished on September 30, 1985.

DESCRIPTIVE ENTRY

These records document the work of SOER during its two-year history. The records consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, and printed materials concerning SOER educational programs, office administration, and relations with other Smithsonian bureaus and offices. Records predating the establishment of SOER in 1983 were created by Falk during his work as Associate Director for Education Programs, CBCES.
