HISTORICAL NOTE

The Smithsonian Institution sponsored a major special exhibit entitled, "Drugs: A Special Exhibition " in May 1972. It sought to trace the historical roots and evolution of the use of hallucinogens and to educate the public in understanding drugs in our culture. The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs sponsored an adjunct activities area for the presentation of panel discussions, lectures, theatrical shows, films, and other events.

The Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs is the representative of the Secretary of the Smithsonian on the Advisory Council for Historic Preservation. The Council is the federal agency charged with advising the President and Congress on matters of historic preservation with regard to the National Register of Historic Places, legislation, and the activities of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property.
