The Smithsonian Institution sponsored a major special exhibit entitled, "Drugs: A Special Exhibition "
in May 1972. It sought to trace the historical roots and evolution of the use
of hallucinogens and to educate the public in understanding drugs in our
culture. The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs sponsored
an adjunct activities area for the presentation of panel discussions,
lectures, theatrical shows, films, and other events. The Assistant
Secretary for Museum Programs is the representative of the Secretary of the
Smithsonian on the Advisory Council for Historic Preservation. The Council is
the federal agency charged with advising the President and Congress on matters
of historic preservation with regard to the National Register of Historic
Places, legislation, and the activities of the International Centre for the
Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property. Box 1 of 5
