HISTORICAL NOTE

John Enos Graf was Associate Director of the United States National Museum, 1931-1945, and, subsequently, an Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian until 1957. John L. Keddy was appointed an assistant to the Secretary in 1946 and became an Assistant Secretary in 1947. Keddy's main duties were of an administrative nature.

DESCRIPTIVE ENTRY

These records of Graf and Keddy deal chiefly with Secretary Carmichael's efforts to reorganize and redirect the Smithsonian's research effort in 1953 and 1954. Smaller amounts of material deal with Graf's work in the National Museum and the work of the Commission on the Organization of the Executive Branch of Government in 1946.
