DESCRIPTIVE ENTRY
The Contracting Officer is authorized to negotiate federal and private grants and contracts for the Smithsonian Institution. He plays an important role in the formulation and administration of contracts and grants, and his files constitute the record copy.
These records are especially valuable for their information about research by Smithsonian staff. They also include a record of special Smithsonian projects and Smithsonian cooperation in research with government agencies.
The Contracts Office files under the following categories: Air Force, Army, HEW, Interior Miscellaneous, NASA, NSF, Navy, and Private SI. The Contracting Officer retains files in active and inactive categories, and selects files for appraisal by the Archives. Records are retained in the Archives (1) by name of principal investigator and (2) by name of Smithsonian division where the grant is not primarily for the research of a particular member.
Files pertaining to rental of computer time and computerized print-outs of SI Financial Statements have been destroyed. A record copy of SI Financial Statements is retained in the Office of Grants and Insurance. See also Record Unit 141.
