DESCRIPTIVE ENTRY

These records document the administrative activities of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Science. They include correspondence and memoranda pertaining to administration of offices and bureaus throughout the Institution, primarily focusing on budget appropriations, personnel matters, or the overall maintenance of museum facilities; exhibitions and collections management; fellowships and grants; congressional issues; proposals for, or reports concerning, scholarly research projects overseas; accounting services; Step-up 90 Program; affirmative action; and endowments. Additional correspondence refers to the African-American Program, Committee on Earth and Environmental Sciences (CEES), International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), Laboratory of Molecular Systematics, Quality Education for Minorities (QEM), International Science Foundation (ISF), Sesquicentennial Celebration, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC), and Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO).
