III. Lend
A. Introduction
Lending objects and specimens for exhibition, research, and study is an integral part of the Smithsonian's mission to make museum collections accessible to the widest possible audience. Outgoing loans are authorized by a standard agreement which generally specifies the collection items to be lent, the purpose, time period, conditions of the loan, the responsibility of each party, and options for renewal.
The Smithsonian lends objects and specimens for educational, scientific, and non-profit purposes. An outgoing loan relinquishes for a specified purpose and time period physical custody of and management responsibility for, but not title to, collections owned by the Smithsonian. Loan requests are considered in light of the nature of the collection; the impact of its absence; the condition of and risk to the object; and security, environmental, and legal restrictions. Borrowing organizations must comply with specified environmental requirements, safety and security precautions, and are prohibited from using Smithsonian collections for private pecuniary gain.To convey to another institution or another Smithsonian bureau or office physical custody and management responsibility for an object owned by the Smithsonian, under the terms of a loan agreement for an agreed purpose and for a specified period of time.
